About us

Craft meets engineering

Behind Hanf & Kalk is the building-biology engineering office for natural materials run by Reinhold Straub in Legau, in the Allgäu region of southern Germany. We combine building-physics know-how with hands-on craft in hemp, lime and clay.

An attic space finished with natural materials: timber beams, reed insulation and a skylight

  • ▪ Engineer (B.Eng.)
  • ▪ Building biologist
  • ▪ Certified clay-building craftsman
  • ▪ Specialist planner for natural materials

Our aspiration: houses that don't just perform technically but feel good. To that end we work with regional raw materials, develop our own mixes and build in the proven timber-frame method.

Our understanding of good building is also shaped by Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language – a language for spaces where people feel at ease. If you'd like to explore it further: A Pattern Language ↗
